Author: Jonathan Franzen has put a little bit of Santa Cruz into his latest novel, ‘Freedom’

Thanks mostly to his popular 2001 novel “The Corrections,” writer Jonathan Franzen was already safely ensconced among the elite of contemporary American literature. But in late August, on the eve of the release of his new book, “Freedom” — his first novel since “The Corrections” — Franzen graced the cover of Time magazine accompanied by the majestic headline “Great American Novelist,” an honor that put him alongside such august names as Salinger, Nabokov, Faulkner and Updike. The Time article also, at least indirectly, vaulted Santa Cruz into prominence, as the place where Franzen and his wife, Kathryn Chetkovich, make their home for part of the year.
