He is called the Book Surgeon

Brian Dettmer  uses knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time from the out of date encyclopedias, medical journals and dictionaries.  It is a work of art and when I first saw one of his creations, I did not know it was a book that was carved. It looked more like something that was made of wood and painted. Brian says: “My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception.”
What a great way to take used old books and turn them into something pretty.  To see his work of art go to: http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/the-book-surgeon-15-pieces
